Dylan snapped out of his blank stare, and introduced himself to Kristen. The three knew trainers chatted up a storm, as they made their way up to Route 1 and the start of their trek to badge #1. When they reached the beginning of Route 1 they split up with a nod of good luck to each other in their quests.
Miles walked a few yards into the tall grass. “This was it”, he thought. He took off his pack, and grabbed his pokeball. Pressing the small button he released Ghastly into the air. “Well my ghostly friend. It’s time we go get you a friend to play with. How does a turtwig sound to you?” Miles asked as Ghastly appeared in the air a few feet in front of him. Ghastly’s was immediately alert. He knew what his master wanted, and was more than prepared to give it to him.
Taking a quick survey of his surroundings trying to figure out the best place to start looking for the turtwig he wanted. He couldn’t believe what he saw. Two trainers were fighting about 50 yards away, and one of them was actually using a turtwig!
“Let’s go watch these guys in action Ghastly. It’ll be good for the both of us to watch an actually pokebattle”, Miles said has he started to jog over to the two trainers dueling. On his way over the young trainer with the Eevee ran past and caused a huge scene where he was actually hit by the turtwigs razor leaf attack. Miles knew that this must have caused him great pain, but what happened next was even worse. The turtwig was fighting with a fearow, and after his battle was interrupted he must have wanted to get revenge on the young trainer. He then flew down and picked him up only to drop him into the nearby lake.
What happened next was truly amazing. Dylan and his caterpie quickly sprang into action. Stopping the pokebattle they were in, they sprinted to the lake. Caterpie used his string shot to create a rope that saved….strange he thought he still hadn’t found out his name.
His attention was quickly brought back to the two trainers that had, had their battle interrupted. After the all the ruckus was over the two trainers continued their battle. The giant fearow was starting to wear down the turtwig, and it was obvious why. The turtwigs trainer just kept yelling at it. He was giving it orders or words of encouragement. Every time the small pokemon missed an attack he was met with an onslaught of “YOU WORTHLESS POKEMON!”, “I REGRET CATCHING YOU!”, and/or “IF YOU DON’T WIN THIS I’M GOING TO SELL YOU!” from his trainer. These only caused the pokemon to doubt itself which lead to more mistakes, and more insults.
Then suddenly just as the fearow was swooping down to make another attack the small turtwig’s legs gave out on it, and it collapsed. The fearows trainer called back his pokemon into its ball, and ran over to make sure his pokemon hadn’t seriously hurt the other younger trainer.
The turtwig’s trainer was less than happy with his pokemon. He ran over and kicked the small turtle. “You worthless excuse for a pokemon I shouldn’t have wasted a pokeball on you!”, he said has he threw the pokeball as hard as he could into the lake. It seemed that he wasn’t planning on taking his pokemon with him. “I hope the birds get you”, was the last thing said as he turned around and walked off.
Horrified by what had happened. Miles quickly ran up to the small pokemon, and got one of the potions he had bought at the market form his pack. “Hey little guy, I hope this makes you feel better,” he said has he began spraying the turtwig with the potion. The small pokemon started to slowly wake up. “Hey don’t try to get up just yet. Ghastly use hypnosis so he can get some rest.” Miles said as the small pokemon kept trying to stand. Following his command Ghastly’s eyes began to glow and swirl hypnotizing the turtwig back into a deep slumber.
Miles looked down at the still injured sleeping pokemon, and knew what he had to do. “Ghastly great job my friend. You did an amazing job with that hypnosis. Now how about we help out our new friend by catching him, and showing him what having a good trainer is like.” Ghastly nodded adding an approving “Ghhhassstttlllyyyy”.
With that Miles took out his spare pokeball and tabbed the sleeping turtwig with it. Hopefully it slept long enough to get captured.

"Oh yes, Caterpie has turned out to be quite the interesting Pokemon, haven't you, Cater- Caterpie? Caterpie?!" Dylan was sent into a state of pure worry when Caterpie was nowhere to be seen. "Jacob, Lashes, did either of you see where he went?" Both the young trainer and fluffy Eevee shook their heads in a discomforted way.
"Well, he was just on my lap not but ten seconds ago! Where could he have gone?!" Dylan sprang to his feet and began to search with no general sense of what he was looking for. "Guys, please help me!"
The two soaking wet companions rose to their feet and they too began to help with the search. How on Earth is one supposed to be able to track a Caterpie? The little guy doesn't even leave any foot prints! Thoughts were rushing through his head as he began to severely panic. Then out of nowhere, Jacob shouted to Dylan. "Dylan, over here! I think I've found a lead," he said while pointing to a spot on the ground. Dylan leaned over to take a closer look and found that there were Pie crumbs lying on the ground, with a trail of blue gooey filling leading away from them. "Good job, Jacob! He must be in there," Dylan pointed to a brushy patch of woods of the bank of the lake.
Dylan hurriedly but carefully followed the trail of filling, but progress was difficult. The branches, saplings, and weeds of the forest were getting caught up in his legs and clothes. Suddenly, off to his left, he heard a high pitched shriek. "Caterpie!!!" He shouted and darted off in the direction of the noise.
Caterpie was backed up against a tree, surrounded by three Bidoofs, and one older more massive looking Bidoof. Dylan quickly pulled out the Pokedex and scanned the bigger Pokemon. Dylan read the text display on the gadget out loud. "Bibarel, the evolved form of Bidoof, is slightly more aggressive than it's previous form. Like, Bidoof, it tends to make its shelter- alright, enough of that, you jerks get away from Caterpie!"
The shouts from the human only aggravated the Bidoof pack even more, as they started taking their turns charging Caterpie. Once, twice, three times. Caterpie was getting tackled at full speed and pinned against the tree. It was too much for Dylan to handle, so he ran over to Caterpie, and layed on top of him, effectively shielding him from the Bidoof and Bibarel attacks. There new target however, was Dylan. Each blow, he was able to feel against his back, and he just kept praying that they would go away. Between the thuds of the enemines hitting his back, and the rustling of their feet, he heard a shuffle in the brush to his right.
Lashes and Jacob had followed Dylan and were now watching the horrific scene. Dylan looked up at Jacob, and gave him a look of pain. Lashes was looking to Jacob also, but with a different kind of look. It was one of confusion, but also of action. Caterpie must have had an extra sense for what was happening, because he peeked out from under Dylan and String Shotted the Bibarel. he then retreated back under his trainer, for his energy was almost completely diminished. Finally, Jacob made up his mind, looked at Lashes, and nodded in a way that said, "Now its our turn to return the favor."
Lashes charged, and the rest was now up to Jacob's commands.

Jacob and Lashes had their eyes set on an extremely horrific scene being committed by the Bibarel and its family of Bidoofs, one of them appearing rather angry. The young trainer deduced that it was the one that had been attacked by Caterpie earlier on. Dylan had bravely intervened just before his Caterpie would have been knocked out and had to have been rushed to the Pokecenter in Viridian City which was all the way at the other end of Route 1. In the save though, he had taken several hits of his own from the ramming fat beaver pokemon. The leader Bibarel stood back and watched to make sure everything went as planned. But if there was anything Jacob and Lashes could do, it would be to mess that plan up. The young trainer frowned slightly as his head bowed and his hand tightened into a fist. The Bidoof wouldn’t be doing this to them if he hadn’t interrupted the fight by being dropped in the water and nearly drowning. He had to fix this.
“Lashes!” he turned to his miniature friend. “Operation Beaver Cleaver!” Lashes gasped at the morbid title. “Ah never mind the operation name… We need to either defeat or make them retreat! There’s four of them and one of you, we got’em outnumbered Lashes!” Her eyes fluttered as she readied to pounce and do her first real pokemon battle. “Wait hold on there, we need a plan…” Some straining and snapping was heard in the distance. Jacob looked over and the Bibarel was breaking apart the string shot Caterpie sacrificed the last of his energy for. “Never mind I’ll make commands as you go! Lashes, use Quick Attack to get around the Bidoofs and use your famous Lash attack on the trapped Bibarel!” Before he had even finished his command Lashes had taken off, becoming a blur of fur as it jumped here in there, using its quick attack to trick the eyes of the plump and much slower pokemon.
The obese creatures saw that their leader was in danger so they forgot Dylan and waddled towards the attacker, but couldn’t keep their eyes on the speed demon. But they were more agile than Jacob had anticipated, the Bidoofs leaping everywhere to tackle the Eevee, Lashes having to kick them aside one by one until finally bouncing off another and appearing high up in the high like she did with Plusle and Minun, but this time, it won’t end with playing. Jacob began to tear up in admiration as his pokemon prepared a beautiful airborne attack. The Bibarel far below stared up at it without any fright and merely sprayed a water gun straight towards his precious Eevee. “Oh no! Lashes try to use a tail whip to knock it away!” The attack hit before he even finished the sentence but she attempted instinctively to try and whip it away but the attack was too strong and knocked out of the sky as she began plummeting towards the ground far below. “This is my fault too! I forgot it was part Water type!” Jacob cried out in self-loathing as he charged out towards his falling pokemon and caught her before she hit the ground by diving. “L-Lashes… are you okay?” The small Eevee opened it’s slowly and fluttered them. “Ha ha that’s my girl!” Then there happiness was cut short by a loud tearing noise. They looked over.
It was the Bibarel, and it had snapped off the strings coiled around it with its massive girth’s strength. It stood up on its two legs and waddled very slowly a few steps towards the trainer and Lashes. Although stronger, it was significantly slower than its pre-evolution counterpart. It said its name aggressively and all the Bidoofs got up from recovering Lashes quick attack and chimed in like a chorus with their names as well. “This may be troublesome… In fact… it may be in our best interest to just run!” But as Jacob stood up to evacuate, Lashes stayed put and stared at her master angrily. “What? You want to stay and battle?” She nodded slowly. “Well then… I guess we’re going for all or nothing!” Lashes got in a battle stance and looked at the ogling group of enemies. “Lashes, use sand attack and get them where it hurts!” Lashes jumps forward, plan formulated. Bidoofs came rushing in a barrier formation as the Bibarel’s mouth fills with more water, plan formulated.
Lashes kicks at the dirt at her feet sending a large spray of dirty towards the close gathering of pokemon, making the Bidoofs stop and look around as they desperately tried to get it out of their eyes and also messing up the Bibarel’s vision and shooting the water gun at its own Bidoofs causing them to scatter. “Got them right where we want them! I don’t remember all of your names right now, but all the trainers who were with me from the start… Feel free to anne up! We need to pick them off quickly, time to show them your teeth, Bite attack!” Lashes leaps forward, fangs showing.

Miles and Ghastly watched as the glowing pokeball flashed several times. The anticipation was like torture to Miles, but just when he thought he couldn’t take it anymore the flashing stopped. “We did it Ghastly!” Miles yelled as he jumped into the air holding the pokeball up high. “He guys look I just caught a new pokemon”, Miles said looking around for his new friends. “Ummm where did everyone go”, he said allowed not seeing anyone.
‘Damnit’, he thought. They must have moved on while he was so focused on capturing turtwig. He immediately felt terrible. He had let his thrust for a new pokemon come first before the amazing new friends he had made. “I can’t believe I let myself get so carried away”, he mumbled as he continued to look for his friends.
He started to hear shouts coming from his left that gave him great cause to worry. They sounded as though someone was getting attacked. “Ghastly hurry up they might need our help!”, Miles yelled as he took off. He got to the scene in time to see eevee perform an amazing attack that caused a large beaver pokemon to spray water at three smaller beaver pokemon. He quickly realized the situation upon seeing Dylan badly beat up next to a tree protecting his caterpie.
“Ghastly I have a plan be ready to use hypnosis when I give the command”, he said as he quickly formulated a plan of attack.
Miles then drew a deep breath and yelled, “HEY YOU STUPID BEAVERS OVER HERE”. Upon recovering from their masters own attack the four pokemon turned to face him. “Now Ghastly use hypnosis”, Miles said and Ghastly was quick to comply. All it took was a few seconds and the four pokemon couldn’t look away from the swirling glowing eyes of Ghastly.
Just as they began to become drowsy Eevee quickly capitalized on the situation, and preformed a biting tackle that caused the three smaller pokemon to collide into each other.
“Nice one Lashes”, the young trainer yelled in encouragement.
Going off of instinct Ghastly then shot out a confusion beam from his eyes that made a direct hit on the semi asleep leader pokemon. “Great shot Ghastly!”, Miles yelled as the beaver pokemon was knocked backwards and rolled several times before coming to a stop. When it tried to stand it found that it couldn’t find good footing, and just stumbled around dizzily.

“Caterpie! Caterpie! Stay with me lil’ buddy,” Dylan was exasperated from his tear filled screams.
Caterpie was writhing on his back, pain consuming the entire length of his wounded body. Though he heard his trainer’s cries, his vision was blurred, and he could not decipher what he was saying. Caterpie’s shame only grew stronger. Not only had Caterpie failed his only friend in the world, but his incompetence had threatened Dylan’s life.
Caterpie couldn’t live with the thought that his ineptitude had once again led to the suffering of others – the suffering of his only true companion. Caterpie knew if it was the last thing he did, it would be to protect this young man huddled over him in tears. The small bug-type Pokémon began to convulse, trying to muster any dormant energy left inside. Motivated by Dylan’s weakening grip, Caterpie lifted his head and squealed softly, “Piiiiii”.
Feebly, the small Pokémon rolled over onto his stout little leg and dragged itself into the fray. Dylan argued vehemently knowing Caterpie was too weak to engage in any sort of Combat; however, the stalwart Pokémon was persistent and havered drunkenly toward the confused Bibarel.
The monstrous beaver creature was livid, bellowing his name stridently. Still it paid little attention to the small Caterpie struggling across the grassy ground. Instead it set its eyes upon Dylan, who had been yelling loud enough for even people in Viridian City to hear. Unable to focus on one target the Bibarel decided to charge frenziedly into the group of Pokémon and their trainers. Dylan was simply the easiest one to focus on.
Caterpie was terrified for his friend. His fear mustered a second wind of energy, as Caterpie lifted his head high into the air cocking it back before violently straightening his body. Out of his mouth exploded the largest string of silk he had ever been able to produce, measuring at about an inch and a half in diameter. Not only was it thick, but it shot from his mouth with more force than he had ever been able to rally. The confused Bibarel had no idea what struck him as he passed Caterpie.
With little effort the Creature collapsed to the ground, falling face first. Caterpie held onto the string in his mouth refusing to let the creature continue his rampage. Rapidly his strength was fading. Caterpie didn’t care what happened to himself; he only cared about buying enough time for his trainer and good friend to get to safety. In his mind he focused on the thought of his dead friends back in Viridian Forest, piled life logs on a campfire in a rain storm – wasted. He wouldn’t let that happen to another innocent being – Even if it meant sacrificing his own life.

Jacob and Lashes saw that another trainer had answered their call for assistance as the latter dashed to and fro towards the prey. “Hey there Miles! Make some use of that little puff of gas you got there! Lashes is going in for the kill!” The tiny little plume with a face merely looked at the opponents as the trainer used the yell and scream attack that Jacob had used on the Plusle and Minun before. “It seems I make a big impact on trainers, heh.” Naturally, the pokemon though it was a new found threat to them so they finished wiping the sand and looked over as Lashes came upon them. The Ghastly’s eyes turned red and devilish. “Wow, those eyes are almost as pretty as Lasshh….es….” he then fell over onto the ground asleep, having fallen under the hypnosis spell as well. But the Eevee didn’t notice and fulfilled her command, tackling into the group of slumbering Bidoofs and bite onto one as it crashed into the rest like dominoes and sent their bulky figures rolling away in defeat. She looked back for her trainer to see if he was proud of her, but he was nowhere to be seen.
But before she could go and vent her lashing rage upon him, another creature stole its attention by the sound of rushing water. The next second a water gun hit Lashes in the back but merely pushed her slightly as pain crawled all over her body. She turned around and stared angrily at the Bibarel, at such a high level that it recovered from its confusion and slumber already. But it was too late to stop the powerful looking string shot, for the beaver creature was bound once more but in a much more impressive manner. The Bibarel began shooting another water gun as it desperately tried to break the string, Eevee jumping out of the way, having learned the move from being hit twice by it. In her mind, if she is hit again, three strikes and she is out!
It started using its quick attack, using the speed boost to circle the creature and dodge its onslaught of repetitious water guns attack, the meager move being its only distant power. She remembered that this creature was stronger but slower. She was fast AND strong. She needs to take advantage of that! She kept running and running around until the Bibarel was a step behind her Quick Attack and she charged him from the front and knocked him from under his feet, coming out on the other side and made him fall on his stomach and face. It bayed out in pain as the Eevee also remembered Jacob’s love for her to jump in the air and do her famous Lashes attack. Twice she has tried. Twice she has failed. Three strikes and you are out!
She was already in the air, the wind blowing the lofty beautiful fur as she rose into the sky identically as before. This time she doesn’t want to play. This time the target is flat on their face! She spun around as she felt gravity kick in, her eyes stopped their fluttering and focused unblinkingly. “Eeveeeee!!!” She soared down from the heavens as the Bibarel finally got its obtuse body standing but it was too late. It looked up only in time to give Lashes her favorite target for her lash attack, the face! With a crash she swiped down with each limb, her nails slashing into its face and cutting it and slamming its face in the dirt once again with impressive force. She prepared to bite if not finished. The Bibarel grumbled its name weakly for a moment before going silent. Lashes retracted her fangs and stepped off proudly, like a princess awaiting her maids and princes.
The Caterpie saw that the battle was done and had been one. Its will power and determination was the only thing keeping it up, even though it had no energy reserves left already. It let go of the thick string shot and looked at its master with glistening eyes and its quivering body as it tried to take a few steps forward to Dylan before crumbling and curling up into a ball and going very still. “Caterpie!!!” Dylan cried out as he ran for him, ignoring his own pain from having taken many hits himself. “Caterpie!!! No please!” He fell to the creature and held it dearly as he held a piece of pie to its shut mouth but it didn’t work. His condition was far too poor, even for his favorite treat. The next thing that hit his mouth was tears as they poured down Dylan’s grimace of anguish and hatred for himself and his neglect. “Someone give me a potion! Please!”
Lashes recalled that she had given Jacob a potion after her perfect job of stealing one at the store. But Jacob was nowhere to be found. She figured that he’d come out offering it. The Eevee quickly sprinted towards the spot he was and discovered his body snoozing in a patch of grass. She smacked her forehead. There was no time for this! She jumped on his stomach and slashed his face repeatedly but he had remained in a deep coma. She prepared another lash but her fluttering mischevious eyes fell upon his back with an object sticking slightly out of it.
The next minute she was carrying a potion in her little jaws towards the gathering of trainers that had huddled around the deathly ill Caterpie. She smiled sadly as she poked Dylan with the item. He slowly looked over, the redness of his eyes and the wet shine of his cheeks made her drop the potion as her jaw fell in a broken heart. He quickly came to life and swiped the potion without a word and started spraying it desperately on the tiny scrunched up bug in his lap that ceased to move. “Caterpie! Wake up! Wake up wake up wake up! Everything is going to be okay now look at what I’m doing! C-Caterpie…look…why don’t you look at what I’m doing… You’re supposed to…” The spray stopped coming out of the object as it emptied. The scar covered friend didn’t look more alive than before. Some of the trainers looked away as Eevee hid her face in his side as she cried. Dylan was speechless and still as stone as his face reflected the Caterpie: Death.
A hand fell on his shoulder softly. It was his friend Miles. “Sometimes… they get too hurt that a potion just won’t do it… and he was weak before you got him and…”
“Shut up!” Dylan looked over his shoulder. “He was never weak! Don’t you dare talk about him like that ever again! He… he isn’t even dead!” Miles back away in fear from being hurt and from the trainer’s denial. “Look… Maybe the potion has kicked in yet… Ha ha yeah… it…just takes a while…right?” He glanced at the pokemon. Lifeless. His eyes closed, replacing reality with a curtain of darkness. His body crumbled as he fell over and held the creature that seemed to look smaller and smaller as time went on. “Caterpie… Your life was so horrible… and I thought I could change that… but I am worse than anyone you have ever met… I did what they couldn’t do… I killed you… it was me…not them…me!” He cringed from the realization and buried his face in the ground and claws the earth madly. His new life as a pokemon trainer and losing the normal life of home was just a dream. He wasn’t meant for college. He wasn’t meant for this. Especially not this.
“Just let me lay here for a while… I owe him that much…in death…” Dylan mumbled, shooing off the other trainers who had their heads sunk in dismay. Moments went by as the wind carried by and whisked away lose grass and leaves, almost as if it was the passing of his best friend’s soul. He couldn’t distract himself from what just happened. He wasn’t sure he wanted to… or even deserved to. His hands found the small Caterpie and caressed it sweetly as he did in a time that the creature would wriggle with life. “Don’t be so still Caterpie… are you sleeping?” he mumbled deliriously. “You lazy bug ha ha… you ate too much… you can’t sleep the entire day… we have…an adventure… remember? We promised we’d adventure…didn’t we? Didn’t…” he choked as his chest heaved, tears burning madly in frustration. And then he felt a strange sensation… it actually made him laugh. It felt… familiar. “Ha ha Caterpie stop it… What are you doing? Wait… Caterpie?” He sat up and looked in his arms. It was Caterpie. And he was licking off the pie on his fingertips. “Caterpie! Look everyone look! He is alive! Come back everyone! Where you all going?!” All the trainers looked back and replaced their eternal frowns with bright smiles and came rushing over towards the reunited pair. Lashes lifted her face and beamed, her tear covered lashes fluttering once more. All was right in the world again.
Jacob came walking on up. “Wow everyone seems so happy to see me again.” Lashes turned around and remembered her previous anger. “Awww you miss me too! Looks like you were crying you little softy! I love you so mu—Ow Ow Ow I thought we were passed this?!” Everyone laughed heartily, like they would never take such small pleasures for granted again.

Dylan was in disbelief. He thought that he had already lost Caterpie in less than a day. "Caterpie, don't you ever put your life at risk like that again! Do you hear me?" Dylan was talking in a strict but kind tone. Caterpie nodded his head ever so slightly, as he was nodding off to sleep. Stars were twinkling in the night sky, and Dylan dropped to his back to stare at them.
The two friends looked around as the other trainers had drifted away from the scene of the drama, and were attending to their own business. They spotted their friend, Miles, about fifty yards away playing with his Ghastly and another Pokemon. "Hey Miles, what's that other Pokemon you're playing with?!"
Miles spun on the spot and yelled back to Dylan. "It's a Turtwig. I caught him while you and Jacob were over at the lake screwin' around!" Both Miles and Dylan chuckled and then returned to what they had been previously doing. Miles, playing with his two Pokemon, and Dylan, observing as much about his new world as possible.
Before long, he heard snores coming from his side. Caterpie had curled up and fallen asleep right next to Dylan. The thought of sleep became a very tempting activity for Dylan. He was trying to figure what time it must have been. They left departed Pallet Town at eight o'clock, and then up until now, three hours must have passed. His best educated guess was that it was eleven at night. "Yup, its time for bed."
While fixing his own bed out of some moss and soft bark, Dylan had trouble keeping his eye off of Caterpie. "What a wonderous creature," he thought to himself. "He was willing to die for me, and he has only known me for one day. Does he really trust me that much?" He knew, however, that he trusted Caterpie that much. In fact, he felt that Caterpie and himself were meant to be brought together, with Professor Oak being some sort of master orchestrator.
The bruised and beaten trainer snuggled up beside his small green pal, and began to drift away into a deep slumber. Just before his dreams could capture him for the night, though, he heard a soft hooting noise coming from the tree above him. He gazed up and squinted his eyes, trying to capture enough light to see. There was a small owl looking Pokemon sitting on one of the branches. Dylan pulled out the Pokedex, pointed it in the direction of the Pokemon, and began to read. "Hoothoot, an owl-flying type Pokemon. Nocturnal and tends to reside in forests." He smiled, closed the Pokedex and then slipped it in his pocket.
Dylan made sure to do one last thing before he went to sleep. The rest of the foil wrapped pie had gotten crushed and mauled in the last few hours' events. Knowing that tomorrow the trainers and himself were most likely going to set out for Viridian City, he unwrapped the pie and set it next to Caterpie. "There you go, dude. Just in case you get hungry for a midnight snack." One last time, he petted Caterpie on the head, and then fell back, closed his eyes, and finally began to sleep off the fatigue of the world that was Pokemon!

A new day had started. The night before Miles had made a small bed out of moss he had found growing on some rocks in Route 1, after letting Turtwig out of his pokeball to introduce himself the two hit it off immediately. The small pokemon was so thankful for being away from his harsh former trainer that he started running circles around Miles as soon as he had figured out what had happened.
Miles, Ghastly, and Turtwig all fell asleep that night next to each other. While they had only known each other for a short time they had created a bond that linked the three like an unbreakable bridge. Upon waking Miles found himself looking down at a still sleeping Turtwig curled up in his arms, and a Ghastly wide awake only a few inches away from his face.
“Well good morning to you too Ghastly. We really must stop meeting like this”, Miles said chuckling to himself slightly.
“Hey little guy it’s time to get up, and start the day”, he said while he lightly shook Turtwig trying to gently wake him up. The small turtle slowly opened its eyes, and let out a big “TUURRRTWWWIGG” yawn. “Well hey there little guy. You hungry?”, he said as the pokemon began to get up and walk around. Turtwig got up and walked over to some tall grass and started munching down. “Eat your fill little buddy. Ghastly would you like a rice ball? I believe I have a few in my pack here”, Miles said as he started looking through his bag until he found the 4 rice balls he had left over from his drive the other day. He tossed one in the air and Ghastly caught it, and devoured it in one motion. “Would you like another master Ghastly?”, Miles laughed as he threw another one in the air; Ghastly finished it in a similar fashion.
While Turtwig continued eating and Ghastly floated around exploring the area Miles being eating the last two rice balls he had, and reflecting on what this new day would bring.

Jacob looked up at the sky and noticed that it was very dark, he gasped out in awe, “I-Its night time?! Already? Gosh today just flew by we didn’t get anything done! And nobody still didn't tell me why everyone was crying like a bunch of babies...” He admired the stars in an enthralled manner before looking down at even better sight: Lashes. She was very oscitant and sleepy, her eye lids drooping down half way making her look very silly. “Ha ha, if only you could see the look on your face right now Lashes.” She lifted her paw to strike but it merely wavered and then dropped back down, becoming far too exhausted from the antics, battling, and drama of the day. And this was only the first sun passing of the adventure. Would everyday be like this? Jacob hoped it so and more. As he watched some trainers get ready for sleeping under the starry night, he goaded, “I’m not very tired I admit… but I’m not the one who beat up a pack of wild beavers twice my size, am I right or am I right?” His eyes fell upon the Eevee once more and she was about to fall over. “Oh gosh I’ll carry you ha ha. How about some hegira and noctivagant traveling under the moonlight, eh?”
The young trainer lifted up the poor thing and held it like it was his newborn baby as she curled up in his arms and closed her eyes all the way and nuzzled into his breast. He smiled to himself as he walked softly on the tufts of grass proliferating Route 1, watching the scores of pokemon eyeing him lazily before going off into dens and holes and comfy spots to rest next to mother earth like they do every night before and to come. Bird pokemon homed in on trees and nests to rest for the next day of sunlight and adventuring the world. The trainers and traders that hung out previously either had set up tents and snoozed loudly or headed out towards Viridian City. He pondered whether or not he wanted to head out there right now. He was itching to get the first badge. Jacob Buckelew had a feeling deep inside him that twisted his complex. Being a part of the pokemon world is perfect and made just for him, but he always felt in life when he did something quintessential, like being a trainer, there was very little point if he was not the nee plus ultra of them all. The best of the best…of the best. Everyone shall cry out his name in endearment and jealousy as he wields his pokemon like powerful weapons and also at the same time, the greatest friends that you could possibly have.
His thoughts were caught off when strange unnatural noises erupted from nearby. He looked over towards the path leading through Route 1, and walking towards Pallet Town was a strange group of people. Not just any people, they were festooned in a very louche manner, wearing all similar strange clothing like it was a gang or a team or something. They were adorned with white cloaks and looked rough. Some of them were equipped with strange equipment that looked like it was sensing something and giving data. Jacob was extremely intrigued. Their belts were littered with pokeballs, and using that information he induced that they were there on official pokemon business! The scrawny boy briskly walked up to them and spied on what they were doing rather obviously.
“It was here alright… the scans are off the chart! And it seems to grow and grow farther down the road we get…” one of the old white wearing men said as he spoke excitedly as he studied the piece of peeing technology in front of him as it made quiet beeping noises.
“Rather mysterious…” a woman with very light colored hair, so bright and blond it almost was white and matching her clothing. “It appeared in such a quiet place right outside of little Pallet Town? Curious. Very curious.”
“Whatever reason it had or wherever it was doesn’t matter much anymore, Professor Acheron,” one of them younger rough looking men said. “It is clearly not here anymore. The thing comes and goes; the most difficult to catch of them all.”
The machine made electrical noises, “Indeed. But if it left any DNA it would be very valuable, even at a low degree as to—“ the old man was slapped on the shoulder lightly and interrupted. He turned over and saw that the younger man had gotten his attention. They were all looking at the big nose Jacob.
“What are you doing here, kid?” the scary man growled with his rough and scratchy voice. “Eavesdropping were you? Didn’t your parents teach you not to mess with strangers?” Jacob was about to speak as he stepped back, petting Lashes as he prayed in his mind that she would not wake up.
“Now now Cinder,” the pretty woman said as she stepped forth and peered at the boy curiously and bent over like she was talking to a child. “Hello sweetie. Beautiful Eevee you have there… Very precious and startling eyes. Does she have a name?”
Jacob gulped and looked down at the Eevee and wondered if she was somehow in danger? No, he was just being paranoid. This woman was nice, she stopped the mean guy from being well… mean. “Her name is Lashes, Missus. And yes she is very precious.” He smiled proudly. “My first day as a trainer with her…”
The woman smiled lightly and fluttered her eyes in a similar manner as Lashes did. “What a wonderful day it must be for you. I am sure that pokemon is very lucky to have you… My name is Ivory. Now, I am sure you are wandering why we are here, little boy?” Jacob nodded sheepishly. “All I want to know is if you saw anything…strange today?”
Jacob thought about the day. There were a lot of strange antics today, but he was sure she wasn’t wanting to know the details of his adventure so far. “I am not sure… Let me think…” His mind always drew blanks while on the spot… and what is strange? Oh how his brain hated decision making too… he was lucky his pokemon chose HIM. But then he remembered. “Oh wait yeah… I was with Lashes and we were battling when I swear I heard a… no… no never mind it’s silly.”
As the scientist looking member of the party continued on the path with his machine, the woman giggled as if trying to attract the younger male into something. The boy was rather asexual and not prone to such tricks, but the girl was indeed pretty. “No, please share. Nothing is silly, little boy.”
Jacob smiled lightly, the night hiding his crimson cheeks. “Ah yes…if you say so… but you won’t believe me ha ha… but… I did kind of sort of maybe just a little not really heard a… a mew?” He didn’t mean to end it as a question, finding his words a little ridiculous and questioning himself. They must think he is stupid. But when he looked at the two, they seemed excited from the words leaving my lips.
“Ivory…” the man grumbled. “Do you think he is telling the—“
“Of course he is,” she smiled warmly as she looked at the man dubiously. “He wouldn’t lie to us, he seems like a wonderful person and an even better trainer right?”
“Hell yeah mam!” he lifted up a fist but then put the hand to his mouth as he realized he yelled and resumed to petting the tiny creature to coo it as if that can keep the pokemon in its deep slumber.
“Thank you for your time, you were a great service today,” she said and turned, following the direction the old man went with a glint in her eye that lit up the night. The man lingered and staired threateningly at the new trainer. The message was clear: Don’t follow us and just go to sleep. Jacob wondered if he did something horribly wrong. Lashes stirred in her sleep.
As Jacob walked away, rather quickly, he heard some distant yelling. They sounded very familiar. Too familiar. “Oh crap… My parents caught onto me…” He thought about their frenzy and chaos he caused from up and leaving them. It was Pallet Town, everyone depended on family and friends. He was a major part of their lives, despite his antisocial behavior derived from his issues of being there in the first place. But innately, he bypassed the guilt and stared at the snoring Lashes and felt further reassurance. This was a good thing. No… the very best. He needs to forget his family… He traveled to a spot under a tree where he found a Plusle and a Minun snugging together with a pokeball within their grasps as if they fell asleep fighting over it. Jacob laughed. This would be a safe spot and a nice surprise for the little rats in the morning. He nestled with them and laid there. But he never met sleep. The one thing he couldn’t forget was the guy with the machine, the woman with the too nice pretty lady, and that man’s stare… his threatening and inhuman stare.

Caterpie only slept for a short while, not willing to keep his eyes off of Dylan for even a moment. Besides Dylan had rolled over in his sleep and trapped the diminutive Pokémon in his surprisingly brawny grapple. Caterpie had endured enough cacophonous snoring and torrential drool for one night. Subduing his urge to shriek loudly, Pie wriggled his way free of Dylan’s grasp and gasped for air as he rolled over onto his back.
Miraculously his friend was not stirred from his sleep, a Caterpie was thankful he did not ruin Dylan’s rest. Caterpie wanted to keep watch, make sure his friend was safe. He owed him that and much more. But first a loud grumble bellowed from the little green bug’s stomach. That all-too-familiar fragrance of sweet pie danced a jig on Caterpie’s sense of smell. His stomach demanded he eat.
Sitting a few feet away a generous slice of Caterpie’s favorite gift waited – nothing like a midnight snack around friends. Wasting no time, Caterpie scuttled across the grass strewn ground and assaulted the pie fortress head-on, demolishing half of it with one massive chomp. Following his initial surge, Caterpie finished off the remaining pie and creating for himself a handsome gooey blue suit.
Satisfied with his quick snack and stealthy escape, Caterpie decided it was time he made his rounds. The Bug-Type Pokémon nonchalantly drifted between make-shift cots, ensuring everyone was soundly lost in slumber; safe from the cruel reality of living. Jacob, the boy he had helped save earlier, was not with the group. It didn’t seem like any fowl play was involved but Caterpie’s curiosity had gotten the better of him – plus he knew Dylan would appreciate him keeping an eye on the youngest member of their adventuring troupe.
Caterpie, forcing himself to remain still, listened carefully to the silent night. At first it was peaceful, the sounds of Pokémon snoring throughout the wide open Route 1; but then there was a disturbance. Somewhere down the roadway a series of voices echoed in argument. Caterpie was immediately alerted and began to make his way up a tree that overlooked the roadway.
Caterpie was stunned at what he saw – a coterie of uniformly white robed humans speaking to Jacob. But it wasn’t just any conglomeration of men, because Caterpie could recognize one of them. Standing threateningly over top Jacob, towering from the back of the group, stood a tall stout man, his face was void of emotion. While the woman charmed Jacob holding a man with an ill-attitude at bay, this monster stood silently, his arms folded. But what plagued Pie the most, were the eyes; cold dead eyes; eye’s that could only be explained as inhuman. Most importantly they were the eyes of the man who tossed him out of the truck in the Viridian forest so long ago. Whatever he was up to with his new contingent, Caterpie knew it was nefarious, and vowed to stop at nothing to stop him.
His anger over boiling, Caterpie mustered the biggest string shot he could manage and prepared himself to attack the man who had decided Caterpie wasn’t worthy of the reprieve of death. The conversation broke up; the group began to walk away from Jacob, who had decided to take shelter at the base of the tree he spied from. Caterpie waited silently, waiting for the group to fall out of sight before he pursued. Caterpie was not notorious for his balance though, as he lifted his head a little extra to see if the coast was clear, a small piece of bark snapped off and Pie slid forward, plummeting from the tree, squealing the entire way down. Just when Caterpie came to terms that he was not gonna survive this, his fall was broken by a small bony boys lap – a lap that let out a loud “Ooof” when his weighty body bounced off it; a lap that was asleep.

Dylan woke up and it was mid-day. He sat up, then gathered himself, and stood to his feet. Searching his pockets and bag frantically, he couldn't find the Pokedex, or any of his possessions, for that matter. Now in a state of panic, Dylan shouted for Caterpie, who was also missing. "Not again," he whimpered to himself. Looking around, Dylan was unable to find any sort of pie trail, like the previous dilemma.
Suddenly, he heard rustling in the woodwork directly behind him, about fifty yards away. Dylan spun as quickly as he could, and then groaned, for he had forgotten that he was bruised and beaten. Through all of the brush, he could see numerous sets of yellow, vicious looking eyes. Where was all the starlight that had cast a sense of day time on them just hours before. He was shocked when he looked into the night sky when he found that there were no more stars and the moon had completely disappeared. As soon as he returned his gaze to a level plane, he became even more panicked. Everything, the trees, the lake, the stumps, and grass, had dissolved into complete nothingness. Glancing down at his feet, he found that he was standing on what appeared to be glass. Dylan was floating in a pitch black universe.
The next thing he knew, he was hit in the gut, and he stumbled backwards, falling on his rear end. He saw nothing except the vague outline of some sort of monster or Pokemon, but it had those vicious looking yellow eyes. The outline rose to two feet, nearly doubling itself in height, and began to fall slowly towards Dylan. The broken trainer tried to will himself to move, but his body wouldn't listen to his mind. He shut his eyes and accepted the fact that he was about to be crushed by this ominous figure. At that exact moment, he saw a flash of light through his eyelids, and then the outlined monster let out a roar of humiliation.
Dylan opened his eyes and saw that the figure was lying on its back, completely unconscious. The world then began to flow back together, and color quickly started to fill in the empty dark pieces. "Caterpie?!" He shouted over and over again but was still answered by complete silence. Beginning to get that familiar feeling of sickness in his stomach, knowing he had lost his dear friend, Dylan rose back to his feet. As he did, he saw the most wonderful thing ever. A beautiful, quick, and large butterfly was flying straight for him.
Dylan's eyes snapped open and he felt that he was drenched in sweat. "Only a dream," he said and shut his eyes again, relieved that he was back on Route 1 with all of his friends. He sat up and began to scan the area for Caterpie. Across the grove, he saw Jacob asleep next to a tree. In his lap, Dylan could see that Caterpie was wriggling around and trying to stand on his feet. "Just as long as Caterpie is with one of us, he'll be fine." Dylan finally closed his eyes, and began to work on falling back to sleep. He was immediately surprised at how much he trusted all of these people, and he had only known them for a day. He rolled to his side, and then was lost to the state of sleep again.

On top of the slumbering scrawny young adult trainer, four pokemon sat dormant as they poked their wet noses in his face as he slept in his typical deep coma, in which you could easily move him around without making him awaken, or at least, very coherent. Lashes fluttered her eye lashes and tail across his nose making it twitch, Caterpie was shooting string down his throat making him choke and cough, and Plusle and Minun were playing around with his limbs like he was a puppet. On top of all that, the early morning pokemon started rising from their nighttime and eating and calling wildly to clear their little throats in the morning; and of course, the flying chirping pokemon that followed the ‘early bird gets the worm’ quite literally. Somehow, this was not enough for Jacob to awaken, for he was dreaming very heavily, his eyes dancing under his eyelids manically and his fingers danced as if he was reaching for something. Then suddenly, Lashes suddenly remembered her name and partially why it was given to her. She lifted her paw and unsheathed a set of tiny but deadly sharp claws. She grinned. She swiped her hand forward…
Jacob rose with a start sending the other pokemon flying off of him in a frenzy except Lashes. “No don’t do it! Don’t do it to Mew— Ow ow ow!” He immediately gripped his cheek, the pale skin already covered in permanent scars. He looked down at a Lashes who was expertly trying to look to cute to punish. “Yeah, like that will work on me missy… okay maybe it will. Get off me.” He then looked at his legs which were tied in a knot as Plusle and Minun ran away. “What the…?” After getting up and stretching in a torpid manner, and coughing up string that he had no idea where it came from as Caterpie strangely hid, he paused to try and remember his dream. It gave him a massive headache… he can’t be feeling like this on the day he was going to challenge the bearer of the Rock Badge! But the dream… What happened last night? And why did he dream of Mew… it doesn’t make sense… He didn’t remember talking about or seeing anything Mew related for so long and only from books. “Then why… and why does my neck hurt!” He reached up and slapped his neck at the acute pain and rubbed it, a strange bump existing at the source of it like he was bitten or something else. “Ugh… I am having trouble remembering ANY thing that happened last night… And what is this Eevee doing here?” Lashes died inside. “Haha just kidding, I know it’s you, Justin.” She grew angry and raised a paw. “Did I take the joke too far?”
After his punishment he walked back to where the other trainers were, which were strangely close together but very far from where he was. “Why did I sleep so far away from everyone? Did they snore like Lash—“ he didn’t finish his sentence because he was sore enough. “Lashes. Operation Good Morning Lashes! We need to be off to Viridian City so we can battle!” As Lashes smiled at the joy of the assignment, Jacob scratched his head and wandered around purposefully but he had no idea why. His feet lead him on their own down the road leading towards Pallet Town. He better not go anywhere near there… what if his obsessive parents were hunting him down at this very moment? They’d do such a thing. But… there is something down here isn’t there? Or something happened… I can’t… Quite…
Footsteps. There were footsteps all along this road. Well… people walk on roads all the time but these seemed so peculiar. Heavy footsteps. One had a deep impression like a woman’s heels. Or a cross-dresser if Oak or his father decided to stroll through. Then with a start he suddenly looked to the right and saw a field of open grass. He saw this before… Images of the Plusle and Minun playing and a flying Eevee, prepared to fight, flashes through his mind. His first pokebattle that wasn’t really a pokebattle. But what was special about this? It was a fun time but…
Some grass ruffled.
“Yikes don’t kill m— A Pikachu?” Coming out of the grass was a fluffy yellow Pikachu that had a scar on its forehead like a scratch. It was sitting rather silently and just staring at the freaking trainer oddly. Jacob recovered from his spas attack tried to act cool like he did it on purpose. “Yeah… just working on my reflexes you know… Heh… I would say my pokemon senses were tingling and I sensed you here. Heheh I was born for this!” The Pikachu remained docile and still like it was dead. “Are you… like some sort of statue or a lawn Pikachu?” He steps forth cautiously and goes to poke it but it jumps forward and clings to him with a smile but still says nothing. “You are rather silent aren’t you? Every pokemon has a personality I guess. You should meet Lashes haha! Now THAT is a talker, let me tell you. If pokemon could speak English, I could only imagine the crazy things… What’s wrong Pikachu?” The pokemon seemed happy but very dormant and kind of detached. It was also slightly shivering like it was feverish. “Did something happen to you? Is that why you have a scar on your head?” No answer. “And you didn’t even put up a fight… You want me to be your trainer just like that?” The Pikachu nodded after a second of thought. “Heh… well I need to give you some sort of name don’t I? How about Whisper… although you haven’t even done that haven’t you? Haha… I like it though. Silence is golden isn’t it? Wait… I like that… I’ll name you Golden… Because somehow… although you’re just staring at me like some abandoned foreign baby… I feel really happy… Just as happy as I was with Lashes and that was my first pokemon ever…” Golden smiled sweetly and clung tighter. “Oh gosh, I wonder how Lashes will take your presence. You seem to be rather dependant like her.”
Lashes came running as if she was waiting for her name to be called. She went to a dead stop upon seeing Golden. She looked at Jacob and then back at the Pikachu and then back at him. The Pikachu merely smiled warmly at the small animal. Lashes looked very upset. “I am sorry Lashes… I know I said I wouldn’t get another pokemon… But look, this one doesn’t talk. I don’t even know its gender! Golden, are you a female or a male?” It nods. “Haha very funny. Are you a female?” It nods. “Okay so you are a female like Lashes then. Hmm..” It shook its head no. “Wait… It doesn’t matter. It is really quiet so you can still have all the attention okay? Now were you a good girl? Did you wake everyone up for me?” She looked back at everyone that was groggily walking up to him with fresh red scratches on their faces. “…I didn’t tell her to do that.”

Caterpie had not slept much. Ever since his plummet, his scar had begun to bother him. He wasn’t sure if it was actual physical damage or the memories that the man’s eyes had brought back to him; memories of the inhuman man’s blade engraving a deep disfigurement into the innocent Caterpie’s body, a burning sensation only trumped by the rage festering inside his heart.
Jacob had left his side, paying little attention to his incessant whimpering. Caterpie’s eyes would not leave the road. His eyes were closed back in the Viridian Forest, ignorant to the true sinful nature of the human heart. He wouldn’t make that mistake again. Crawling out into the road, Caterpie inspected the still fresh foot prints from the encounter the night before. They were muddled by new ones, but he could tell they were heading away from the way they came – the city.
The thought brought chills to him. It was from the cities that the men came with their weapons and trucks. It was to the cities that hundreds of Pokémon were brought without even a chance to defend themselves. At least the trainers fought wild Pokémon giving them a fighting chance to stay sovereign. The men from the city enslaved them. Except for him – the one with the eyes – he didn’t even care to exploit innocent wild Pokémon. Instead he got his rocks off torturing them; leaving them with revolting scars and blemishes; or simply leaving them on the side of the road to die. He was a monster with no purpose to his vile acts.
A heavy footstep sounded loudly from behind the wandering Caterpie. The sound was all too familiar. Pie slowly revolved his head to look back. Behind him towered to large boots followed by a pure white cloak cascading off a mountain of a man. His eyes drifted down to the small Pokémon, yet he showed no emotion – It was him. His hood overcast a dark shadow on the man’s already ominous eyes, but the gaze was unforgettable as Caterpie froze in terror. His guard had failed him again.
The man nodded slightly toward his hand. Caterpie’s eyes drifted to the man’s left hand slowly. He wasn’t sure he wanted to see whatever the man had in store for him. Hanging from his grip was a combat knife stained with a rust coloring. From its sharpened blade dripped a series of fresh crimson tears. Caterpie cringed at the thought, his anger only being subdued by his incredible sense of dread. Caterpie’s eyes floated back to the burly man’s stolid scarred face. And there it was. From his thin lips pursed a tiny smug grin. It only lasted a moment before disappearing behind the man’s taciturn glare, but Caterpie knew what he saw. The man placed his grimy blade back in a sheath and passed by Caterpie. The wounded Pokémon would not move, his large round eyes transfixed on the man heading toward the city alone – the city of broken hopes and oppression. A city Caterpie vowed he would brave.

The bright sun was warming Dylan's face, and this time he knew he was awake for real. "What a nightmare," he thought to himself. The young man peered around and found that Jacob, who strangely had a Pikachu crawling on him, Lashes, and Caterpie were all loitering on Route 1, apparently ready to depart. He stood, stretched, grimaced on account of his bruised body, and then briskly jogged over to the group that had already awoken.
Jacob waved, while Lashes seemed to be in a poor mood. "What's the matter with her," Dylan asked of Jacob. The thin, young boy shrugged his shoulders, but then jumped when the Eevee clawed him across the leg. The party of friends began to laugh in harmony.
"So, what is on today's agenda Jacob?" Dylan kept his eyes fixed on Jacob intently, waiting for a response. He was ready for them to move on and continue their journey. Jacob initially looked around in all directions, and must have been certain that Dylan had been talking to somebody else. Finally, he realized that he had been asked the question and informed the crew of the day's plan. "Once we get everybody and everything gathered up, I figured we would head out for Viridian City and then Viridian Forest. Then, depending on the time, we could make way for Pewter City, home of the Boulder Badge." Jacob then nodded his head, proud of the fact that the other trainer was looking to him for leadership.
Dylan hadn't noticed, but Caterpie had been shaking and cowering behind his leg when Jacob mentioned Viridian Forest. After the fact, though, Caterpie decided that he was hungry, and was determined to get his trainer's attention. The small bug begin to stealthily tie Dylan's shoes together with a series of string knots. In the past few hours, Caterpie had found that his silk from the String Shot was alot stronger, and grew even stronger every time he used it. The trainer went to walk away, and then was tripped by his own feet, tied together with the silk. He fell flat onto his face, and then bellowed, "What the?!?!" Caterpie then let out his all too familiar, "Piiiii," shriek.
"You did this?!" Dylan couldn''t help but smile at the craftiness of his companion. "Well Caterpie, I don't have anymore Pie. It seems you ate it up last night, or at least that is what your outfit of blue filling tells me. How about this, you stay here with Lashes and Pikachu, while Jacob and I go find some berries for all of you to eat?" Caterpie was hesitant at first, but then crawled over towards Lashes.
"Be gentle with Caterpie, Lashes. And Golden, this is Caterpie, another one of my friends." Jacob and Dylan then walked off towards the edge of Route 1 and started a hunt for berries. "Are the others ever going to wake up, Dylan?! I can't wait to get my first badge!" The two boys glanced back, and saw Lashes dominating a sort of PokeGame, apparently not happy that others would dare question her rules or the fact that she was winning. Pikachu was prancing around, trying to understand the game itself, but having fun none the less. And then there was Caterpie, standing away from the others, unwilling to participate. He dropped his head, crawled away, and then turned around again to watch Jacob's Pokemon play. There was a look on his face that Dylan had never seen before. A look of despair, and Dylan knew that something was on Caterpie's mind...but what?

After watching the tiny Caterpie score a huge hit on Gary, Blinky did a quick arm pump in celebration. He had gone to High school with Gary, and hated the kid after he dumped Blinky's lunch on Chicken noodle soup day, the Greatest Lunch of the year.
As the battle ended, Blinky's phone buzzed, and a message said your package arrived -Abby. "Yes!" he thought, knowing exactly what was in the box. He hastily put his new Squirtle in his pokeball, quickly ran out to his car, and sped back to his apartment in Vermillion. When he arrived, he ran in the door and pushed right past his girlfriend, to his gift. He popped Squirtle out, and said, "I hate pokeballs its like a mini-prison. Back at home in the Safari Zone everyone is always outside moving. I'll keep you out as much as possible bud"
As he told this to Squirtle, he greedily ripped into his package from his parents. A note on top said- "Here's the supplies you asked for. Please go catch as many as you can, and make us proud. Don't come back til your the best! Just kidding. Love, mom and Dad." As his brain tried to process this, Blinky was already into the contents. He pulled out 2 pokeballs, a bag of riceballs, a sack of 500 gp, 4 potions, and a great ball.
"SCORE!" he exclaimed, as Abby looked at him with a bored expression. "You're such a nerd" she said. Blinky took the insult in stride, as he whispered something to Squirtle. The small blue turtle nodded happily as it turned and hit Abby with a quick jet of water.
"You're such an ass!" she said as she shook herself off. Blinky threw everything in his pack, hung the gp sack on his belt, threw his phone in his desk, and threw Abby the keys. "I'm going on the whole master quest so take the neon. I won't have a phone, um I'll write though. We'll be through sometime soon. I'm off to Pewter city. My parents gave me a map so I'm good to go" he told her as he grabbed his Cubs hat, which he put on sideways.
"You look like a moron with that hat. But ok be safe. I'll miss you. I'm just gonna play volleyball" she said as he kissed her goodbye. Blinky ran out the door, and grabbed his bike. He had a quick stop to make before setting out to adventure.
He pulled into Kentucky Fried Pidgey and ran inside. "I quit!" he yelled, as his manager waved him off while she processed some papers. She'd figure it out soon anyways. He was good to go on money anyways thanks to his parents.
As Blinky headed back to his bike, a shady man with a large trenchcoat and a humongous moustache tripped him and took his gp sack and then ran off before Blinky could get up. 10 gp lay where the man dropped it from the sack, but that was all he had left. Cursing under his breath, Blinky got on his bike and rode to the highway to Cerulean City. The man was long gone, so he had to figure out what to do now.
The others he had rudely ignored were bound to be heading for Pewter too. Blinky had plenty of supplies, so money wasn't an issue yet. As he pulled into Pewter City, he saw no sign of the others, so he biked to Viridian. As he pulled in, it was getting dark. "I'm not gonna get anywhere being a jerk. Tomorrow I'll apologize and try to make friends" he thought, as he laid down outside the large gym, which had been closed for sometime. He hoped he awoke in enough time to catch them, and he knew that couldn't be there yet, for he drove entirely too fast. He kicked himself for being a jerk, and passed out as the night slowly crept on...

Jacob slowly picked up berries, gathering them being the last thing on his mind. The strange obsession he has with trying to remember the night before, the new Pikachu, and most of the allure of getting the first badge, which laid in wait for him in Pewter city in the Boulder Gym, just calling out his name and begging for him to wear it. “Don’t worry badge… I hear your calls… I’ll take you home soon.”
“What?” Dylan looked up from picking a large amount of berries, his determination to feed the ever-hungry eater of all things causing his collection to be far more plentiful.
“Er… nothing.” Jacob hid his face in embarrassment as he picked a few berries. He supposed he should get a decent amount. He has two mouths to feed, although Lashes is either worried about her figure like a typical girl or requires little fuel to run her young spirit, and Golden… He or she seemed rather sick and even odder than his first pokemon. He looked up from the boring job of picking berries and espied them. Lashes was trying to play tag with Golden by poking it and running away, but the Pikachu just stared at its stomach and titled its head in confusion. Lashes then proceeded to get angry and was determined to teach the simple rules of being “it” as it merely turned away from the Eevee and actually started licking the little Caterpie’s scar and staring at the wound with queerly. What a strange Pikachu, he thought. Definitely should be inspected at a pokecenter if something was severely wrong. Good thing Viridian City was nearby.
“I think that will be enough,” Dylan said with a large grin. His pockets were bulging with berries and his hands full. Jacob nodded and walked over to the group of pokemon.
“I got some riceballs if this isn’t enough for breakfast,” Jacob incited them as he knelt down and offered his handful of berries. Lashes bent over to sniff them and wriggled her nose in distaste as she trotted off like she was too good for them, causing Jacob to laugh at the antics. She was very much like her trainer. Golden ogled at the small blue foods and shambled towards them and picked a single one up and ate it promptly. It smiled and scratched its pointy ear as it then proceeded to jump on his face and cling to it like an octopus, suffocating him. “Gsmmfffmfmff!” Jacob tugged on the Pikachu with all his nonexistent strength and it proved useless. Golden was much stronger than it looked. Lashes opened a single eye and peered over at the two and immediately got jealous, instantly coming over and running her small form across his legs and looking up at him sweetly, trying to steal the attention. After some effort the Pikachu came off as it stared into Jacob’s eyes creepily. “How did I end up with the most bizarre pokemon on the planet?” Pikachu remained silent but took it as a joke or a compliment. Lashes made Jacob scream like a girl.
After that, Jacob and his two pokemon were getting ready to leave Route 1, having no intention to have any more pokemon battles or battling a trainer just yet. A rolling stone gathers no moss… And a still stone definitely doesn’t get any badges. He looked back at the other trainers, awaiting for them to follow the scrawny leader as he fancied himself to be. There seemed to be hesitation though… the Caterpie was afraid of moving any forward. Something about the city or the general direction they were heading was scaring it. Past Viridian City was indeed the forest that he probably came from… and he did have scars from something. Then suddenly he made a connection. He looked at the two pokemon clinging to his legs like toddlers. The one on the right… Golden. It looked up at him with mystery in its eyes, but more importantly, it bore a scar. And that was no Harry Potter scar. It looked very similar to the one on Caterpie except even larger. The only real difference between them was Caterpie was fearful about pushing onward, but Golden still seemed happy and somehow made Jacob very happy. It had no qualms at all with the idea of heading where he planned to go. Then a pain stung him in the neck again and he slapped at it like he was bitten or something and came in contact with the bump he had previously. He shivered. “Bugs biting me in the middle of the night… Creepy.” He sighed, his feet tapping on the ground energetically. At least his headache disappeared suddenly along with his grogginess once he got his new pokemon. But the wait was too long, he decided to go on out and head towards the city whether or not they were ready. They’d catch up soon anyhow.
He traveled past the tents with the camping trainers that waved and offered to have morning pokemon battles or to trade. Jacob shook his head no silently as his face reddened, afraid of the large opposing group of strangers, putting more pep in his step, which was difficult with the Rugrats clinging to his limbs, Pikachu out of necessity and Lashes because she was just incredibly competitive. But eventually he reached the entrance to Viridian City and read the sign with its name. “Viridian City… this town has a badge… The Earth Badge right? You’re just in my way, let’s head on through and visit the pokecenter.” He trudged on and observed the immediate surroundings. He actually was taken aback. Although Viridian City is considered a small city, it absolutely trumps Pallet Town! There were rows of nice houses and a decent pokemart and a pokecenter right next to it. And the gym was like the Lab in Pallet Town, very obvious even in a bigger place such as thing due to its large size. The lights were off in it though, strangely. But before he could immediately skip all the details of the City, he decided to think of his pokemon first. He ambled up to the pokecenter as he ignored all the snickers from the people looking at his whimsical pokemon.
Jacob Buckelew entered through the fancy shmancy slide doors and looked around. It was all clean and filled with trainers holding screeching and sleeping pokemon. Lashes immediately felt intimidated and looked around uncertainly. Golden looked amused at the surrounding pokemon but also felt rather sorry, its face frowning slightly towards the sick and troubled pokemon. “Ugh… this is going to be one long wait isn’t it?”
“Another one?!” a nurse came rushing up to Jacob scaring him like it was a Gyarados rushing him on. She had huge fancy pink hair and a small white nurse uniform. It was only Nurse Joy of course. Jacob was about to apologize or show his embarrassment but she continued in her frightful manner. “That Pikachu! Pokemon have been coming in here for weeks with scars just like that one! Except that one seems to have been cut pretty severely… poor thing…”
Jacob widened his eyes confoundedly as he looked around at the surrounding pokemon. They did indeed all have scars in similar spots on their body. “But… what does this all mean? My friend has a Caterpie that also got a scar too… Are they going to die?!” All the trainer’s in hearing perimeter started going crazy.
“No no no!” Nurse Joy wiped sweat from her forehead as she tried to calm everyone down. “They won’t die, in fact, they are all perfectly in good health as long as the scar is concerned. But we are trying to figure out what exactly is causing all this. Its making everyone very worried!”
“That is really odd… I have no clue why this is happening… My friend’s caterpie is afraid to go into the Viridian Forest or is scared of this City or something…. Something is fishy around here.”
“Yes… there have been sightings of strange people around these parts as well…” Nurse Joy looked around in a paranoid manner. At the very mention Jacob gets a headache and Golden starts climbing up his shoulder and liking his forehead like a dog to fix the wound in a motherly manner. “They have white cloaks and are rather shady… no one can really say anything about them… there is no proof. It’s rather strange though… a lot of people have a hard time remembering details about them…”
“W-What?” he gritted his teeth as the pain increased as his mind started to spark on its own, desperate to attain some sort of memory. “People aren’t… remembering… I don’t remember last night at all… and every time I think about it… my head hurts so badly…” Golden looked very upset and stared at Jacob with great determination. Nurse Joy’s eyes bugged out.
“Hold on just a second… Let me see…” she leaned forward and touch his neck and felt around for a second until she located the miniature bump. “That’s it… right there.”
“What? Yeah I woke up with like a tiny bug bite or something… it’s no big deal really. It doesn’t hurt any—“
She grimaced in dismay as she stepped away. “It’s not a bug bite hon… Its where a needle poked through your skin.”
“A what? I never went to the doctor’s in my life, I have been cooped up in stupid Pallet Town all my life! There is no way… there is no way…” he gripped his head as he started to sway back and forth like he was about to pass out. Lashes began to tear up as she witnessed her trainer of two days fall apart before her. The Pikachu continued to stare intently at the forehead of Jacob until the pokemon fell off and stared from a distance as the scrawny trainer descended towards the ground. Nurse Joy cried out and lurched forward, grabbing him by the shoulders and preventing him from falling and busting his head open on the hard panel floor.
“Little boy, little boy!” she called out as all the attention folded in on the center of the room. Lashes jumped on her best friend and tried to lash him awake as the people all around thought it was extremely weird that the Eevee was trying to murder its own trainer. The Pikachu stepped forward and stared at the unconscious child blankly as always, its eyes glowing. Lashes kept lashing and lashing away but it wasn’t awaking him, even more asleep than he usually is. Tears discolored the fur around her eyes as she started to get weaker and more pitiful with her swipes. The only movement from Jacob was his eyes moving beneath his eyes like he was dreaming the night before.
“It was here all right… the scans are off the chart!
“All I want to know is if you saw anything…strange today?”
“The thing comes and goes; the most difficult to catch of them all”
“Left any DNA”
“Now now Cinder”
“I was with Lashes and we were battling when I swear I heard a… no… no never mind it’s silly”
“No, please share. Nothing is silly, little boy.”
“Mew.”
Jacob rose with a gasp, scaring the crap out of Nurse Joy in a similar manner as she did to him just moments ago. Lashes started crying even further but out of joy now, clinging to his limps again. Golden smiled quietly. “My gosh! Are you okay?!”
“Yes…”
“I need to get you in the hospital right now! This is serious! What is your name?” she began to lift the weightless being up but he brushed her off politely and smiled at her as he stood up on his own, perfectly fine.
“No thank you… I feel great actually. And my name is… Detective Jacob Buckelew.” He smiled at the coolness and corniness that he felt blowing up inside him. “I will figure out what’s going on here and in those forests! You can count on me, Nurse Joy!”

"Come on, Caterpie. This is the same stuff that is inside your Pies. There just isn't a crust around it. Cater-argh!!!" While Dylan was trying to explain the berries to Caterpie, the little bug decided to shoot a String Shot straight into his face. "Why won't you just eat these?! This had to have been what you ate when you lived in Viridian Forest." At that moment, Caterpie scurried away off to the burm of the road and cowered away from Dylan.
This strange reaction caused Dylan to worry even more about his small friend. Something struck Dylan and suddenly, he realized that something bad must've happened. That would explain the scar...the shifty behavior. He walked over to Caterpie and bent over so that he could whisper to him. The soreness in his back made it difficult to stay in the position. So, instead, he stood and spoke in a normal tone. "Caterpie, something happened in the Forest, right?" Caterpie crawled towards the young man, trying to reassure him. "I see. Well, I think Jacob and Lashes should be able to protect us. Right Jacob? Jacob?!?!?!" Dylan looked around and couldn't spot Jacob anywhere. "Not again..."
Caterpie crawled back onto the road and reluctantly ate a berry that had fallen onto the road. "Wait a second, I didn't drop any berries. The only other person who had berries was-" Dylan took off on a full sprint after a trail of berries that Jacob must've dropped. "SHOOT!!!" He stopped on a dime, and jogged back to pick Caterpie up. The boy reached his arm down and Caterpie hesitated for a moment, and then crawled onto Dylan's shoulder.
The two took off after Jacob. Dylan knew that Jacob certainly couldn't take care of himself. The duo were ripping into the wind, eyes squinted, and determined to catch up with the runaway Jacob.

‘Alright, what to do next? If I’m going to continue on this adventure I have to keep growing as a person, but most importantly as a trainer,’ Miles thought as he finished his last rice ball. He put Gastly back into his ball, and walked over to where his newly caught Turtwig was grazing in the tall grass to put him back in his ball.
After gathering his pokemon Miles started to think about the future. He needed to build a team, a team that he could be proud of and that could help him get all the gym badges. “I really need to be careful what pokemon I catch,” Miles whispered as Turtwig entered his pokeball. He tied off his bag and slung it across his back.
“Well I think it’s time to move on,” Miles proclaimed. He looked around to see that everyone else had started to move on. He looked and saw Dylan tear off then turn around to pick up Caterpie and take off again. ‘I might as well tag along with them, and see where this journey takes me,’ he thought as he took a deep breath and took off after his new friend.
Miles wasn’t sure what the future had in store for him, but he was determined to meet it head on with his friends and pokemon by his side. He needed to make a plan, and the inner workings of his mind began to piece together the puzzle that was going to be his future. His mind immediately turned to Gastly.

Caterpie couldn’t help but shake in fear as Dylan walked northward toward the city of Viridian. No matter how driven he was; no matter how much he wanted to get revenge for what happened to his fellow Pokémon in Viridian; the tragic memories still hung in the back of his mind restraining him from rushing forward bravely.
Still he allowed Dylan to rush ahead, jogging briskly in the cool morning air. It felt good against the burning scar across Caterpie’s abdomen. Eventually the slow hum of people talking and soft pat of rhythmic footsteps lulled the anxious Caterpie into a slumber. After his sleepless night, the slumber was welcome.
Dylan chuckled as he saw the small Caterpie’s head bob gently over his shoulder. Thinking it would be safer Dylan put the small Pokémon into his Pokeball and placed him safely into his pocket, never allowing his hand to come off of the pocket, sheltering the Caterpie. It wouldn’t be long before the two were safely within the confines of Viridian City. However, the road was not empty, and the two were not alone.
Hiding in the shadows of the sparse trees around them a towering figure stalked silently, an artist admiring his work from afar. He enjoyed the raw form of art, the personal touch it took to cut his knife into living flesh. It was invigorating. All the Pokemon of the world were no more than subjects for him to test on; to perfect his art form. As he followed he scoped out the frolicking Pokemon of Route 1 contemplating his next stroke of the paint brush, the next masterpiece he would make. Still he had duties, the pursuits of his allies were above his won desires and would inevitably allow him to make the most outstanding pieces of art.
He stopped as he saw the buildings of the city ahead, a reminder of his obligations to his compatriots. He gave one last glance toward the boy who held his pocket defensively, like a mother bear over her cub. The look that little Caterpie gave him angered him. His vicious art form was meant to destroy the resolve of his victims, yet this one looked at him with hope; as if it wanted revenge. It might prove to be interesting, the man smiled as he slipped away into the forest on his way to meet with his allies.
Dylan stepped into the city and began to walk toward the gym believing that would be the first place their little friend would travel to. However, it wasn't long before he stood he could a glimpse of the scrawny trainer bent over, tending to some wounds on his legs. Dylan laughed as he figured they were the doing of Jacob's rambunctious Eevee. Diverting his direction Dylan waved and approached Kilo stopping to let the groggy Caterpie out of his Pokeball. Caterpie' sight slowly came into focus as he realized he was in the city. His body began to shake profusely as he backed up sheepishly behind the leg of his friend.

Jacob walked out of the doors of the pokecenter with at first blind and courageous purpose, but eventually descending into a thoughtful and sluggish schlep to ultimately a dead stop a few feet from the electronic sliding doors. Two pairs of feet, both of four legs, followed briskly behind, the first more concerned brown feet scurried around the trainer and looked up as Jacob put a thumb in his mouth dubiously. It was Lashes, peering up at him with unintentional cute flutters of her lashes, her eyes still stained from crying profusely two days in a row. She was not desiring attention like most times; the small Eevee was of course unsure about what just happened a few moments before. Jacob fell over in front of them like he was shot with a gun… but now he stormed out with a stupid smile on his face? The slower, yellow haired legs followed in last place as Golden, the Pikachu earned on the following day as Lashes, plopped its equally small self to the right of Eevee and stared blankly as usual, an energetic call from the pokemon having yet to come out of it. Even though it was only the first day, Pikachu’s were usually hyper active and talkative.
The two-day-old trainer suddenly had found the reunion of the memory pertaining to last night at first invigorating and exciting, but then suddenly it was becoming more than that. If those people were the ones who hurt all of those pokemon… and Jacob told them about a pokemon they were searching for… does that mean that the… “Ouch lashes, what are you doing?” The fluffy pokemon was digging her claws into his thin legs, but only slightly with anger, more so desperation to hear what was going through his head and his condition. “Oh Eevee… lose that frown, you are too cute to look so crushed. I am fine, I don’t feel sick at all. Not entirely sure what happened back there…” he scratched the back of his head kind of finding a strange sense of amusement and allure to it. The unknown was scary sometimes. But it also meant hidden purpose and could hold a flower ready to blossom in his life or even in his world. Same thing pretty much. Golden finally came up and licked his leg, sending a tickling but yet comforting sensation that Golden seemed to give with its very touch. Suddenly the worries that plagued his mind drifted away and he forgotten the sadness that threatened to make him brood and mope about the potential harm that had been caused to a pokemon, which are the very things that he loves most in the world.
Eventually the team of pokemon’s ears twitched and turned, hearing something before the human did, turning around and peering at the Route 1 entry to Viridian City. Jacob took notice and silently looked up from them towards the direction. He couldn’t see them at first but he knew very well what was coming. His followers just now catching up to their vigilant leader. What if he didn’t get up from his little episode? They would have had no clue and would crumble under the loss of their pack leader. “Nice hearing fellas. Just look at that… I go too fast and my students lag behind and get lost without my guidance. Hmph.” He smiled at the slight seriousness and slight sarcasticness of his antics. He then saw the gang hurrying through to the city. “Don’t tell them I said all that,” Jacob glanced at the two characters at his feet, “Oh wait nevermind ha ha, one of you is silent and the other can only say their pokemon name!”
The other trainers arrived to Jacob as he tended to his sliced open calves as Lashes licked her dirtied claws with a satisfied look while Golden licked the wounds promptly, preventing any tears or whines. They all looked at him with no questions, used to seeing him like this. “Hey, I do this on purpose. This is good training for Lashes. I am a very dedicated and strong trainer, letting my pokemon train on my own body like that. I don’t see any of you doing it!” After he felt properly excused to himself, he stood up from his sitting position and began walking through the town idly walking by the gym and went on to recite what happened but was slow and unsure with the explanation, never having been good at story telling. “I remember what happened last night suddenly whenever I visited the pokecenter to get Golden checked. The rest of the pokemon there also had similar wounds…” he looked at the understandably scared Dylan, “But they are harmless… don’t cause any permanent damage or anything. No one knows why it was done… which makes me come back to last night…” he remembered the part of that strange and minute conversation he held with the pretty white clothed woman in Route 1, and decided to leave the ending part that he was ashamed about out of the recitation. “Apparently there are men and women in white organization clothes going around purposefully but not being pinned with anything. But what is connecting the two are the timeframes that these sightings of the secretive rare organization and cuts on the pokemon being rather suspicious. And what this has to do with last night… I saw those people… I saw them and they were searching for pokemon before my eyes… and they saw me and without my knowing they injected me with something that somehow gave me insomnia… but back in the pokecenter I had some sort of epiphany and I can recall what happened… And I feel that we should do something about it… what do you guys say?”
